Speakers’ Corner Trust is a registered charity which seeks to promote active, engaged citizenship both in the UK and in developing democracies. These pages describe who we are, explain our aims and outline how we seek to achieve them.
The Speakers’ Corner project aims to promote freedom of speech, public debate and active citizenship as a means of revitalising civil society in the UK and supporting its development in emerging democracies.
SCT pursues its aims by forming local Speakers’ Corner Committees made up of representatives of the public, private and voluntary sectors which ‘own’ and steer projects designed to stimulate and support public discussion and debate.
Speakers’ Corner Trust is a registered charity, established in 2007. Its patron is the former Czech President Václav Havel and its all party Advisory Council is chaired by Justice Secretary Jack Straw. SCT is administered by a Board of Trustees. Its director is former MP Peter Bradley.
Partnership is a key feature of SCT’s work at both national and local level. SCT has been fortunate to secure the support of major funding bodies, leading businesses and a wide range of important collaborators and supporters all of which have helped define and deliver the Speakers’ Corner project.
