Jack Straw retired from the House of Commons at the 2015 general election. He was first elected MP for Blackburn in 1979 and was appointed as Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice in June 2007 in which capacity he served until the general election of 2010.
He had previously served as Leader of the House of Commons, Secretary of State for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Home Secretary. In Opposition prior to 1997 he served as shadow Home Secretary, shadow Environment Secretary and shadow Education Secretary.
He was educated at Leeds University and called to the Bar in 1972. He is a visiting fellow of Nuffield College Oxford and a fellow of the Royal Statistical Society and is married with one son and one daughter.
